2008 NASKA SEEDING RULES

  • 1) Seeding is required for Black Belt rated NASKA members at National and World tournaments. STATE rated tournaments are not required to seed competitors.
  • 2) Seeds are taken from the most current NASKA National and World rating sheets. The previous end of year World and National ratings will be used to select seeds for the first three (3) World tournaments of the current year. After the third World tournament of the current year, new up to date World and National ratings will be used at each remaining World tournament. These new rating will be used to select the seeded competitors.
  • 3) Each World and/or National tournament can seed up to a maximum of 6 competitors in each back belt weapon and form division. The top four world rated competitors who are present are seeded first at world events and the top four nationally rated competitors are seeded first at National events, with two regional rated competitors taking the 5th and 6th seeds (Each NASKA World or National Rated Event can associate with one regional ratings organization to select the regional seeds. If the world or national tournament chooses not to associate with a regional organization, they only seed world or national competitors.). If there are not four world rated seeds present at world events or four nationally rated competitors at national events, the regional ratings will be used to fill out the maximum of 6 seeds. If there are more than four world rated competitors or four national rated competitors at national events present, the regional seeds present will take priority over the other World and National rated competitors.   Once the six seeds are selected, they will go last in the division in the reverse order of his/her rating with the regional seeds always going after the selected world or national seeds. The only exception to this rule is at the beginning of the year before current ratings have been established (first three world tournaments), you must, if additional world or national seeds are needed to reach four, use competitors who were rated in a lower age group and are now required to move into the older age group at the beginning of the new season. These world or national competitors will be seeded after the current world or national seeds in that division. This rule applies for form, weapons and sparring. Sparring: Pick the four highest world rated competitors for world events and national rated competitors for national events in the division to be your four seeds. The four seeds will be taken out and not bracketed until the ring gets down to the final four. The four seeds will then be bracketed with the final four in the following order. Place the number one seed in the first bracket, place the number two seed in the eighth bracket, place the number three seed in the sixth bracket and place the number four seed in the fourth bracket. If there are less than four world seeds at world events and less than 4 national seeds in a national event the associated regionally rated competitors must be used to reach the four seeded competitors in a sparring division. If additional seeds are needed after using after using the appropriate world, national and regional seeds, the additional seeds will be taken first from rated competitors who are moving into an older age division; second, the associated regional seeds; third, Nationally rated competitors for world events; and fourth, rated competitors who are moving into a heavier or lighter weight division. If additional seeds are still needed after using both of the above, a random draw is used to select the needed seeds.
  • 4) National ratings will be used to select seeds at all "A" and "AA" tournaments.
  • 5) Weapons and Form seeds will go last in the division in the reverse order of their rating. (Example: The # 1 seed will go last; the # 2 seed will go next to last, etc.)
  • 6) The four World or Nationally rated seeds in each fighting division will be bracketed with the four remaining finalist in each division. The # one (1) seed will be placed on the top bracket, the # four (4) seed will be placed in the third bracket, the # three (3) seed will be place on the fifth bracket and the # two (2) seed will be place on the bottom bracket.
  • 7) If there are less than four (4) appropriate seeds in a sparring division and by using byes the appropriate seeded competitors that are present can move into the final eight brackets, selecting addition seeds to make four is not necessary.
  • 8) If a black belt competitor is rated in a division at the end of the year and changes to an older age division at the start of the new year, he/she will be given the opportunity to be seeded in the older division if there are not four appropriate seeds in that division present using the most current ratings (See number 3).
  • 9) If a division is eliminated by combining with another division in a new year, rated competitors from both divisions will have the opportunity to be seeded in the new division. A competitors total points will be used to determine their seed placement. This does not apply when a totally new division is created. There will not be any seeding in any new established division until new seeding is established (example: Extreme form and weapons).  If a additional sparring divisions are created, rated fighters who move into the new division/s because of the changes in divisional weights will be seeded in accordance to their total points.
