Super Fights

In the early and mid-1980s, the Diamond National Karate Championships presented special “challenge matches” showcasing North America’s best fighters. As these exciting bouts received much attention and recognition, they soon became known as the “SuperFights.”

SuperFight Rules

The rules for the 2010 Super Fights at the Diamond Nationals will use official NASKA point fighting rules (rules sheets will be made available at the Diamonds or in advance by mail) with the following exception:

1. A fighter must win by at least two points at the end of the regular 2 minute time period or sudden victory overtime

2. A fighter can win by a seven (7) point spread before the end of the 2 minute time period.

3. The competitor who is ahead by at least two points at the end of the 2 minute time period is declared the winner or who gains a two point advantage in sudden victory overtime.

4. Sweeping take downs are allowed but no judo throws (per NASKA rules: only one second or immediate grabs are allowed.)

5. Out of bounds is when any part of a players body touches out of bounds.

6. A point/s can be gained by the following ways: 1) Scoring a point by the majority of judges (two points for kick, one point for hand techniques); 2) Your opponent touches the fighting surface with any part of his body except his hands or feet (one point); 3) Your opponent goes out of bounds for any reason (Fights out, forced out, steps out, etc.); 4) Penalty point/s.

7. A competitor can score on multiple scoring opportunities at the same time: example: Fighter “A” scores a side kicks and knocks his opponent down and out of bounds all on the same exchange. Fighter “A” will score 4 points on the exchange.

8. All required NASKA equipment is required except the competitors have the option to wear the head gear.

9. A competitor cannot earn a point and lose a point at the same time. Example: If a competitor scores a point and then falls down on the same exchange. The competitor will lose a point for falling down. The penalty over rules the point/s earned.

10. Points can be earned for all legal NASKA Sport Karate techniques to legal target areas with light, medium and/or hard contact. Penalty points can be called for illegal techniques and for striking illegal target areas.

11. There will be two open SuperFight divisions (one lightweight, one heavyweight) for all male adult black belts on Friday. These two divisions will come down to the top two lightweights and top two heavyweights. The two lightweight finalists will be matched with two seeded lightweight SuperFighters, and the top two heavyweight finalists will be matched with two seeded heavyweight SuperFighters. These eight fighters (4 lightweights & 4 heavyweights) will compete at the Diamond finals for the Lightweight and Heavyweight SuperFight Championships.
